When your child turns 18, you lose the legal right to make medical decisions, access their records, or manage their finances. We help you fix that in 15 minutes.
The moment your child turns 18, everything changes legally โ even if nothing feels different at home.
HIPAA regulations mean healthcare providers cannot share your adult child's medical information with you โ even in an emergency.
Without a Healthcare Power of Attorney, you have no legal authority to make medical decisions if your child is incapacitated.
Without a Financial Power of Attorney, you can't pay their bills, manage their money, or handle financial emergencies.
FERPA protects your adult child's educational records. Colleges won't share grades, financial aid, or disciplinary info without a release.
Simple, guided questions about your child and your family. No legal jargon โ just plain English.
State-specific legal documents pre-filled with your information, ready to print and sign.
We tell you exactly who signs what, whether you need a notary, and where to file each form.
Most parents don't find out they have no legal authority until they're standing in a hospital hallway or on hold with a bank.
University of Miami ยท Age 19
In August 2018, Baylie was drugged at an off-campus party and later struck by a car. Her mother, Shawnee Baker, flew to Miami immediately โ but when she arrived at the hospital, she was turned away.
Because Baylie was 18 and had no Healthcare Surrogate or HIPAA Authorization on file, the hospital had no legal basis to involve her mother in any medical decisions. The hospital's ethics committee stepped in instead. Shawnee couldn't request additional testing, couldn't access records, couldn't advocate for her own daughter.
Baylie died on September 27, 2018.
Her family started Baylie's Wish Foundation to make sure other families understand what a 10-minute conversation and two signatures could have changed.
What would have changed everything
If Baylie had signed a Healthcare POA and a HIPAA Authorization before leaving for college, her mother would have been legally recognized as her healthcare decision-maker. Shawnee would have been at the table for every conversation. That's two documents. Less than 15 minutes to complete.

Your phone rings at 11 PM. Your child was in a car accident 500 miles away. You rush to the hospital โ 8 hours of driving with no information โ only to hear: "We can't tell you anything. Your child is 18." You sit in a waiting room, completely shut out, while strangers make decisions about your own child.
The fix
A HIPAA Authorization lets the hospital update you in real time. A Healthcare POA means you have a seat at the table.
You're paying $40,000 a year in tuition. But when you call the registrar to ask about your child's grades, the answer is blunt: "Under FERPA, we cannot share academic records with you." You can't confirm they're even enrolled. You can't talk to a professor. You're funding an education you have zero visibility into.
The fix
A FERPA Release gives the university permission to communicate with you about enrollment, grades, and financial aid.
Your child comes home for winter break quieter than usual. Something is wrong โ you can feel it. You call the campus counseling center to share what you've observed and coordinate care. The response: "I'm sorry. We can't confirm or deny whether your child is a patient here." You're left helpless as the semester starts again.
The fix
A HIPAA Authorization allows the counseling center to work with you as part of your child's care team.
Your child is studying abroad when their wallet and passport are stolen. You try to help โ call their bank to freeze the card, wire money through their account, handle anything. Every door is closed. "Without a Power of Attorney, we cannot take any action on behalf of your child." They're stranded. You're powerless.
The fix
A Financial POA lets you act on your child's behalf in emergencies โ immediately, from anywhere.
You can't predict a crisis.
But you can make sure you're never locked out of one.
